A Seattle-based interior designer shares how a fusion of old and new elements adds depth and character to modern homes

Interior designer Bhina Wolf thinks globally when it comes to designing a home’s interior, whether it’s near her Seattle base or in other parts of the world. She loves exploring the diverse cultural elements and individual styles that every homeowner brings to the table and adding that into the design. “I can then create a unique and personalized space that inspires, enchants and delights,” says Wolf, the owner and principal designer of Bhina Wolf Atelier.

A passion for design. Wolf’s grandfather inspired her early interest in design. “His carpentry work and our cultural background sparked a deep passion in me,” she says. Wolf’s mother, a textile designer, and her father, an electrical engineer, also encouraged Wolf and her siblings to follow their dreams. Wolf earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design and turned her passion into a profession.

Personalized approach. The thing Wolf loves most about being an interior designer is the opportunity to meet new people and immerse herself in their cultures and lives. She says she loves to learn about their lifestyles, backgrounds, preferences, what they love and all the minor details of their daily living. “By incorporating elements of their lives and backgrounds into my work, I get to craft spaces that truly reflect who they are,” Wolf says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see how these personalized designs enhance their daily lives and bring their visions to life.

Looking for ways to blend tradition and culture while keeping the look fresh? Wolf has some tips below.

1. Curate a Global Color Palette

Use a color palette that reflects your background. Combining traditional cultural colors with modern neutrals allows the colors to stand out yet still harmonize with contemporary tones, Wolf says. “For example, pair rich hues like deep blues and vibrant reds with sleek grays or whites,” she says.

At this home in Faridabad, India, Wolf’s clients wanted to honor their heritage with traditional colors that would still fit with their modern sense of style. Wolf added a vibrant rug with traditional patterns and rich colors that complements the sleek lines of the contemporary sofa and coffee table. “It creates a balanced and visually engaging space,” she says.

2. Incorporate Artisan Craftsmanship

Integrate handcrafted items, such as woven baskets, hand-carved furniture or artisanal textiles into your design. “It highlights skilled craftsmanship from various cultures,” Wolf says.

In the primary bedroom of the same home, Wolf added a handcrafted wood mirror above the vanity. The ornate carving and detailed edging provide a subtle contrast that encapsulates the modern Victorian feel the homeowners wanted. “Including these types of elements adds authenticity and a personal touch to your design,” Wolf says.

3. Mix and Match

Combine traditional and modern furniture for a look that’s both familiar and fresh. “This fusion balances historical and contemporary elements, adding character and interest to your space,” Wolf says.

Classic wing chairs are tucked around the corner from the main living area. The traditional look helps ground the overall space and plays off the more contemporary feel of much of the rest of the room. The dark blue and burnished gold finishes on the chair and table also reflect a more traditional color palette. “It’s an eclectic look,” Wolf says.
